What you need:

  • 1 1/4 beef chuck roast
  • 3 carrots, chopped
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 can chopped stewed tomatoes
  • 4 beef bouillon cubes
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1/2 cup barley
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, plus more to taste
  • Salt to taste

Cook chuck roast on a slow cooker for 4 to 5 hours on high setting, adding bay leaf and barley during the last hour. When meat is ready and tender, slice into bite-sized pieces. Remove bay leaf and set the meat, broth and barley aside. In a large pot over medium high heat, heat oil then cook carrots, celery, onion and mixed vegetables until tender.   • 1 1/4 kilogram beef chuck roast

  • 16 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 cloves garlic, sliced

Carefully make small cuts in beef and place garlic slices inside the cuts. Place the roast in a slow cooker then pour all the contents of the pepperoncini jar over the meat (including the liquid).
